Yandex Islands is a new platform from the Yandex Search Engine that was officially launched in July 2013 to improve the SERP by adding interactive answers to search queries. These really are new type of snippets in the SERP that are mostly driven by structured data and the schema markup added to web pages.
As Yandex introduced this new feature there have been two major changes in the way the user interface works:
a) The SERPs has context-based interface, i.e. the interactive widgets that the search engine displays depend on what kind of action the user decides to perform (e.g. book a table at a restaurant, check in for a flight, order a cab, compare prices for a particular product or listen to a song).
b) The SERP consists of blocks instead of links, and businesses – using the schema.org markup – have a great amount of control of what information is presented in their snippet and how it is presented.
