Aldo Gangemi is a leading Italian researcher in semantic technologies, applied ontology, knowledge engineering and the Semantic Web. He is Full Professor of Informatics at the University of Bologna, Department of Philosophy.
His work connects formal ontology, natural language processing, machine learning and linked data. After beginning his research career at CNR in 1989, he contributed to foundational ontology work such as DOLCE and DnS, helped establish ontology design patterns as a core practice in Semantic Web engineering, and founded STLab, the Semantic Technology Laboratory.
Gangemi’s research has shaped key areas of knowledge graph construction, semantic interoperability and machine reading. Among the projects associated with his work are FRED, a system for transforming natural language into RDF and OWL knowledge graphs, and Framester, a large-scale resource connecting linguistic and factual knowledge through frame semantics.
