There are almost infinite different ways of meditation whose goal is to understand the mind and its facets. It is often used as a mean for calming and regulating the body.
The history of meditation is entwined with the religion within which it’s been practised. References were firstly found in Nepal’s Hindu Vedas, as well as India’s. Later on meditation developed its range of practice towards Confucianism and Taoism in China and towards Hinduism, Buddhism in Nepal and India.
