Currently available in the U.S., it <a href=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/optimizing-ai-mode-guide\/\">transforms Google Search into a chat-like experience<\/a> powered by a generative AI agent. At its core, it combines Google\u2019s Gemini model with real-time search capabilities to produce conversational answers\u2014similar to what users see in Perplexity or ChatGPT Search. It\u2019s a <strong>multi-turn, interactive experience<\/strong> where users can refine their queries and receive synthesized, context-aware responses directly within Search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To demonstrate this, I recently ran an experiment on the <strong>product description page for the iconic Tiffany\u2019s <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiffany.com\/jewelry\/bracelets\/tiffany-knot-wire-bangle-GRP12838\/\">Knot Wire Bangle<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a <strong>meta-prompt<\/strong> originally developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jeanchristophechouinard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jean-Christophe Chouinard<\/a>, I asked to Google&#8217;s AI Mode:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cShow me the raw tools requests for the following query [product-name]\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695-1024x496.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695-1024x496.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695-768x372.png 768w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695-150x73.png 150w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-2025-06-11T092623.695.png 1360w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The response included 5 key areas that <strong><em>supposedly<\/em><\/strong> are used to ground the response when a user asks information about the product:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the price?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What materials is it made from?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there customer reviews?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What sizes are available?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the history or inspiration behind the knot design (Collection history)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Our simulator \u2014 which casts a broader net with <strong>20 synthetic questions<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>accurately predicted all 5 key areas surfaced during the audit<\/strong>. We intentionally look at a broader set of sub-queries because these are inherently stochastic and influenced by <strong>personal user context<\/strong> (as highlighted by Elizabeth Reid, VP and Head of Search, in <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/search\/google-search-ai-mode-update\/#ai-mode-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google\u2019s blog<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI Mode is evolving to incorporate even more contextual signals. Soon, it will offer suggestions informed by your search history, and users will be able to opt in to connect other Google services\u2014starting with Gmail\u2014to further personalize the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode-1024x394.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode-1024x394.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode-768x296.png 768w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode-150x58.png 150w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/image-fan-out-simulator-ai-mode.png 1457w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The tool is still under development, but it already reveals the potential sub-questions GoogleAI Mode (or similar system) might generate\u2014and evaluates their coverage based on the analysis of the text elements found on the page.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We then compared the page content against those 5 queries using a high semantic similarity threshold of <strong>0.80<\/strong> to simulate a competitive AI retrieval environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outcome:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4 out of 5 tool intents were well matched.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>\u201chistory\/inspiration\/collection\u201d<\/strong> query failed to retrieve a suitable chunk from the page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"591\" height=\"308\" src=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/fan-out-experiment-ai-mode.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/fan-out-experiment-ai-mode.png 591w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/fan-out-experiment-ai-mode-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/fan-out-experiment-ai-mode-150x78.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is the revealing part: <strong>Google\u2019s AI Mode filled the gap by citing a competing site<\/strong> when I went deeper searching for that information (entity facet).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"715\" src=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany-1024x715.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany-1024x715.png 1024w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany-768x536.png 768w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany-150x105.png 150w, https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/06\/ai-mode-tiffany.png 1072w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This confirms <strong>the structural gap was not about missing content<\/strong> \u2014 but about missing a <strong>retrievable, semantically aligned chunk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a text chunk?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A <strong>text chunk<\/strong> is a contiguous segment of text, typically ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs, that is semantically self-contained and topically coherent. In the context of information retrieval and large language models, a chunk is the atomic unit used for indexing, embedding, and retrieval.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>My understanding of AI Mode is that Google is using a <strong>hybrid chunking strategy<\/strong>, leveraging multiple methods depending on the processing stage. Based on the configuration options available in Vertex AI Search, it\u2019s likely that <strong>layout-aware chunking<\/strong> plays a central role\u2014particularly during the ingestion phase. This approach segments content based on HTML structure, such as headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/understanding-chunking-google-ai-mode-practical-content-volpini-zseaf\/?trackingId=SwY8YPV4Hera9ZsjBStl4w%3D%3D\">read more about it on LinkedIn<\/a> for further insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where <strong>Chunk Optimization<\/strong> becomes critical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Content must be <strong>entity-rich<\/strong>, <strong>self-contained<\/strong>, and <strong>semantically aligned<\/strong> with predictable queries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI systems retrieve <strong>chunks<\/strong>, not full pages. This means your <strong>beautifully designed product page may still be invisible to AI systems<\/strong> if the individual sections\u2014or chunks\u2014aren\u2019t optimized and self-contained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the chunk isn&#8217;t optimized, your site won&#8217;t be the source \u2014 even when it should be.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>At <strong>WordLift<\/strong>, we store <strong>multi-chunk representations for each entity<\/strong> \u2014 whether it&#8217;s a product or an article \u2014 inside the Knowledge Graph. Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and semantic elements like bullet points and tables to enhance readability. <strong>Each chunk should focus on a single entity <\/strong>(<em>e.g., Tiffany Knot Bangle<\/em>)<strong> or a well-defined relationship involving that entity<\/strong> (e.g., <em>Tiffany Knot Bangle is made of 18k gold<\/em>)\u2014fact-based, self-contained, and semantically aligned with user intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google AI Mode and similar systems don\u2019t retrieve entire pages\u2014they retrieve meaningful fragments. If your content isn\u2019t chunked and semantically structured, it simply won\u2019t surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how we prepare content for AI.
