{"id":4940,"date":"2017-06-23T09:34:02","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T09:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/?post_type=entity&#038;p=4940"},"modified":"2017-06-23T14:59:04","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T14:59:04","slug":"umberto-eco","status":"publish","type":"entity","link":"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/entity\/umberto-eco\/","title":{"rendered":"Umberto Eco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Umberto Eco<\/strong> (born 5 January 1932, died on 19 February 2016) was an Italian <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Semiotics\" href=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/entity\/semiotics\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0216\/entity\/semiotics;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.077zf;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Semiotics\" >semiotician<\/a>, essayist, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist.<\/p>\n<p>Graduated in philosophy in 1954, he dedicated most of his life to the study of the <strong>Medieval Culture and Philosophy<\/strong>, laying the foundations for his fictional works.\u00a0He became popular for his groundbreaking 1980 novel <strong><em>The Name of the Rose<\/em><\/strong>, which 1986 in was transposed into a movie starring\u00a0Sean Connery by Jean-Jacques Annaud. The novel was based on an\u00a0intellectual mystery combining semiotics in\u00a0fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory.\u00a0He has since <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Writing\" href=\"https:\/\/wordlift.io\/blog\/en\/entity\/writing\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0216\/entity\/writing;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.081rb;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Writing\" >written<\/a> further novels, including <strong><em>Foucault&#8217;s Pendulum<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><i>Baudolino<\/i><\/strong>. His most recent novel,\u00a0<em>Numero Zero<\/em>, was released in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>As a semiotician, in 1988 he founded the Communication Department at the <strong>University of the Republic of San Marino <\/strong>and he is considered one of the fathers of the <strong>communication studies<\/strong> in Italy. Since 1975 he was Professor of Semiotics at the<strong> Alma Mater Studiorum &#8211; Universit\u00e0 di Bologna<\/strong>, the most ancient University in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Around the end of the 50s, after his experience in RAI, the Italian national television, he started to write about mass media and mass culture, publishing many articles which were later collected in <strong><em>Misreadings<\/em><\/strong> (original title, <strong><em>Diario <\/em><em>minimo<\/em><\/strong>) and\u00a0<strong><em>Apocalypse Postponed<\/em><\/strong> (original title, <strong><em>Apocalittici e Integrati<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Since the late\u00a060s he dedicated his studies to\u00a0<strong>semiotics<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>narratology<\/strong>, and <strong>literature<\/strong>.
